We were hoping Digital Foundry would take a look Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Editionbecause as we have explained in our scathing rating of the new PlayStation 4 remaster, the performance issues plaguing this re-release are simply unacceptable.
In its latest video analysis, Digital Foundry pretty much repeats what we found during the review process mentioned above. The game’s frame rate is pretty shocking in general – dynamically immersing itself everywhere in both exploration and combat. Chrono Cross remains a really good PS1 JRPG – but the fact that it kind of works worse back in 1999 is a shame not even hitting 30 fps most of the time.
Digital Foundry’s Tom Morgan even goes so far as to call it “one of the underperforming games I’ve ever seen on PS4,” which is amazing considering it’s essentially an emulated PS1 title.
To make matters worse, quite a bit of stuttering occurs on top the already pathetic frame rate. These stutters usually occur during combat and – as mentioned in our test – can lead to a noticeable input lag.
So yes, Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ticks all the right boxes Yes, really poorly optimized – and it’s the same story on both Nintendo Switch and PC. We’re hoping that Square Enix fixes these issues – at least partially – but the complete lack of communication on the subject doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. It’s also worth noting that the remaster didn’t have a day-one update either.
